Torture and summary executions “are abuses in Eritrea order of the day” is the accusation made United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay that the secret prisons of the country ” there are between 5000 and 10,000 political prisoners” . The human rights situation in Eritrea, continued the representative, of which term at the helm UN body has been extended by two years, “is cause for serious concern. Credible information indicating that the abuses included arbitrary detention, torture, forced labor, military conscription and extensive restrictions on freedom of expression, assembly and religion. ”

Periodically the human rights groups are raising their voices on the living conditions of about six million Eritreans and every year – according to estimates issued – there are thousands of people trying to flee abroad to evade conscription for all citizens , males and females between 18 and 48 years for an indefinite period.

In the former Ethiopian province, independent since 1993, elections were never held independent and the only political party recognized is that the former rebels of the Popular Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) in power since then. Lawyers for Human Rights denounced hundreds of thousands of detentions ‘incommunicado’ in secret prisons and groundwater in the country where the prisoners – most of conscience, including journalists and dissidents – are exposed to torture and ill treatment.
