DAR ES SALAAM darts lovers will have chance to rekindle their passion for the sport as this year’s regional tournament, dubbed DADA Cup, starts at the Moshi Hotel, Manzese, in the city on Saturday.
Dar es Salaam Amateur Darts Association (DADA) has organized the tournament under sponsorship from the Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) with a view to maintaining successful promotion and development of the sport at the domestic level. A member of the DADA tournament organizing committee, Bharat Vyas, said the event will comprise singles, doubles and team games, with participants coming from all over the city.
“Team matches will have a district-based format, in which each of the city’s three districts, namely Ilala, Kinondoni and Temeke, will be represented by two teams,” he said. The three districts will, therefore, have to pick players from their respective darts clubs and form combined district outfits that will then battle it out in the DADA Cup’s team event.
Vyas said Ilala darts clubs that will contribute players to the district’s combined squad include Dar es Salaam Institute (D.I) Club, Ibukoni Darts Club, Kimanga Darts Club and Upanga Darts Club (UDC). “Kinondoni clubs, whose players will feature in the tournament, are Friends Darts Club, Katumba Club, Kashudu Club, Kawe Club, Lugalo Combine Club, Mbezi Beach Club and Urafiki Club, while Temeke clubs are Magereza Ukonga and Police Barracks,” he said.
Vyas said the tournament’s draw was expected to be held at the same venue on Friday, adding that singles and doubles’ matches will be held on the opening day from 2p.m, while team games will start on Sunday.
“Preparations for the tournament are going on smoothly thanks to better supervision of the DADA tournament organizing committee under the leadership of the association’s Chairman, Azim Haji Mohamed and Secretary, Lambert Rwihula,” he said.
Vyas, a veteran UDC player who is also one of the long serving DADA officials, noted that the association’s current tournament organizing committee, which was formed on May 17, this year, comprises newly elected members that will be responsible for supervising all tournaments organized by the association.
He mentioned other committee members and their respective districts in brackets as Suleiman Mohamed (Ilala), John Elilaki (Kinondoni), Sylvester Kazimoto (Temeke) and Mariam Mgonja, who represents female players. He also said Ilala District has already formed its two teams that will battle for honours in the tournament, in which the teams will be headed by skipper, Mohamed Samji ‘Jaluo’ and his assistant, Edward Bachwa, while team manager will be Ashok Motichand.
Jaluo, one of the feared darts players in the city and a member of UDC, told the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ that Ilala teams had already embarked on intensive training ready to make an impact in the tournament. “We have been training hard for the tournament and we are looking forward to any challenge that will come up in the event,” he said.
